Not Your Mother’s Lace
With the re-emergence of the bohemian and vintage look in fashion and the gaining popularity of shows like Downtown Abbey, it is no surprise the use of lace is making a strong comeback in wedding design. This year’s wedding trends will see a slight move away from the popular shabby chic theme of last year, to an aesthetic that is lighter in texture, more feminine, delicate, and elegant.
Lace has always been trending in bridal fashion as far back as the Victorian era. Some notable wedding dresses that have gone down in fashion history include those worn by Grace Kelly, Princess Diana, and more recently Kate Middleton. One element all three dresses had in common was the gorgeous, prominent lace embellishments throughout the design of the dress. 2013 will surely see the use of lace details in more than just wedding dresses. Lace may be used to personalize ones wedding paperie design, tablescapes, cake design, bouquet, as well as event design.
We recommend when designing with any type of theme to aim to be subtle yet effective and more importantly, do not be afraid to mix contrasting fabrics/elements. Think a lace tablecloth over a shimmery, sequin-like base, or a mixture of lace and burlap….the variations are endless.
